Germany-based packaging company Sonoco has produced a package for a vegan spread using a specially designed variant of its PermaSafe container using in-mould labeling (IML) which is itself injection moulded.

Packaging for the organic “Brotzeit” vegan spread – produced by the Tartex brand of Allos Hof, a German subsidiary of Netherlands-based Wessanen group – is styled to look like a wooden barrel.

The new packaging was introduced in October 2015. The Brotzeit range is available in 19 varieties and is sold throughout Germany in organic supermarkets and health food stores (13 varieties are also sold in export markets). Tartex introduced its first 100% plant-based spread more than 70 years ago.

Sonoco worked with Allos Hof to develop a customised package based on the PermaSafe container range. The packaging for the vegan spread is made using IML.

PermaSafe is a lightweight plastic package that, the company claims, offers long shelf life, individual design options and can be used for sterilised foods that would usually be packaged in metal cans.

The 125g containers are shaped to appear like a tiny barrel made from wooden slats. The lid is resealable and the packaging is made air-tight with a die-cut aluminium membrane.

Andreas Rothschink, Sonoco’s sales director of plastic packaging, said: “After sterilisation, the spreads keep in the PermaSafe container for 12 months without refrigeration. This makes IML packaging a modern and consumer-friendly alternative to metal cans.”

The injection-moulded label features a matte finish developed by Sonoco to achieve what it considers to be a natural, paper-like feel. Within the IML process, the PP containers are manufactured and labelled in a single operation.
